Medigap Plans

Medigap policies (otherwise known as Supplements or "letter plans") do exactly what the name implies: they cover the gaps that Medicare does not cover.

Medicare (as previously stated on another page) is an 80/20 insurance plan.  Medicare beneficiaries are responsible to cover the 20% plus any deductibles.  This is where Medigap policies come into play.  They cover the 20% and depending on which plan you have, may cover the deductibles as well.

A few things to be aware of regarding Medigap policies:

  • You have a variety of options to choose from.  The plans that cover the most will also cost the most.

  • Per Medicare guidelines,  "A "G plan" is a "G plan."  This means that no matter what carrier you purchase it from the plans will be identical.  The only difference will be the cost that the company charges for the plan.

  • Supplement plans DO NOT include a Prescription Drug Plan.  You will need to purchase a stand-alone PDP in order to have drug coverage and be compliant with Medicare rules.

  • Supplement plans do have a nice benefit in that you pay the monthly premium and you generally do not have any co-pays that you are responsible to meet.  Additionally you can have multiple primary care physicians which comes in handy when living in two places throughout the year.

  • Be aware though that as a Medigap policy, the Supplement plan only covers that which Medicare covers.  Therefore, benefits like dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, and others are not included.
